The Cat Island Weekly Update: May 19th

May 19, 2023 | Weekly Update

Dear Cat Island Club Friends,

A celebration is defined as a special and enjoyable event that people organize because something pleasant has happened. I’m not sure if the word “pleasant” accurately captures all of the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into restoring Cat Island Club; “pleasant” is not nearly a strong enough word to describe the relationships that we made over the past year. I think you get my point. It is time to celebrate the official opening of the Cat Island Club golf course. This momentous event happens to fall on a day where the country honors and remembers those active service members who paid the ultimate price to secure our freedom.

So, next weekend will be a time to celebrate the re-opening of the Golf Course at Cat Island Club. While it sometimes seems like we’ve been restoring this golf course for many years, at other times it feels as if we started last week. Nearly a year ago, I had a makeshift office set up in what was to become our beautiful new golf shop where I began meeting so many people. I can still remember telling everyone of the vision and plans for Cat Island Club. We had plans, our suppliers had plans and, of course, God’s plans trumped all other plans. Nonetheless, we’re ready to raise the flag (literally) and officially open the golf course to the members of Cat Island Club.

While we have been very successful in enrolling members, we want everyone reading this note to help us celebrate next weekend. We have two events planned during which we would be honored to host all of Beaufort to celebrate with us on this special weekend. Two additional events that are reserved for only members and their invited guests.

Friday, May 26th
12:00 until 1:30 PM – This event is open to everyone!

The Ribbon Cutting ceremony with the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce will be held on the first tee. Along with the President of the Chamber and several other dignitaries, we’ll cut the ribbon to officially open the course for play. Following the ribbon cutting, we’ll witness a few ceremonial tee shots from several Cat Island Club Founding Members and one very special guest. After the tee shots, everyone will be invited to stop by the Cabana Bar and Grill adjacent to the 1st tee and raise a glass to toast the resurrection of the Cat Island Club Golf Course.

Saturday, May 27th
9:00 AM until 3:00 PM – This event is open to Cat Island Club Members and their invited guests.

Patriot Golf Weekend all across our Nation is an opportunity for the entire golf community to come together to honor the sacrifice of America’s heroes. With your help, we can stand arm-in-arm with the families of America’s fallen or disabled Veterans and first responders by funding life-changing educational scholarships. All members are encouraged to bring guests to play golf on this day for a very special price. We’ll also be taking donations for the Folds of Honor on the first tee this day with 100% of the collected funds going directly to the Palmetto Chapter of the Folds of Honor. We’ll have some nice FOH swag to give away, but nothing to equal the warmth that you’ll feel in your heart. So please make plans to come out and help these families right here in South Carolina for this most worthy cause. For all the guests out there, if you don’t get the call from a member to play, you may want to think about joining the club and bringing out even more patriots to play; or, you can stop by the club anytime next week to drop off your donation for the Folds of Honor.

Sunday, May 28th
2:00 until 3:00 – This event is open to everyone!

We’ll be raising the flags over Cat Island Club! We have installed three beautiful flag poles in front of our clubhouse. On Sunday, we’ll conduct another ceremony to celebrate and commemorate the day. We’ll start with a tribute on the bagpipes to start. Then a lone bugler will pay respect to the fallen heroes by playing Taps. As the National Anthem is played and our hearts swell with pride, we will have the incredible honor of a Fly Over by Marine F-35’s led by Lt. Colonel Chris Brandt. Prepare to shiver up your spine as they make a low-level pass to tip a wing to the patriots on the ground.

Monday, May 29th
12:00 PM until 3:00 – This event is open to Cat Island Club Members and their invited guests.

A traditional Memorial Day picnic at the pool. We’ll have a great menu off the grill, music, and pool games to put a cap on the holiday weekend. Nothing ushers in summer like a Memorial Day picnic. Our spectacular pool complex will be hopping with outstanding food prepared fresh by Chef Lucas and drink specials, sure to be a hit with everyone. Whether you like a mellow “chilled” day poolside or a wild limbo contest, stop by the pool at Cat Island Club on Monday.

For any golfer looking to improve your game (isn’t that every golfer?), you’re in for a very special treat.  Erika Larkin will be at the club on June 16th and 17th to conduct several specialized clinics for every aspect of your game. Erika has been the number one teacher in the state of Virginia since 2014 and on the Golf Digest teaching staff since 2021. In fact, Erika was featured in the latest March / April edition of Golf Digest. You can follow Erika on Instagram @Erikalarkingolf. She is truly a gifted teacher and will certainly be a great path to your improvement and understanding of your golf swing. Please email me at tmervosh@resortdevpartners.com for more information and to sign up for one of Erika’s clinics.

I also want to thank all of the members who braved less than ideal conditions last night at the Cabana for the Brats and Beer night. While the weather wasn’t great, the food, beverage and music were and those who attended had a great time. The Cabana Bar hosts happy hour Thursday through Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 and lunch is served Saturday and Sundays starting at 11:00 AM. The water is warming up and the sun is usually shining brightly.

This is a great time for Cat Island Club, and I sincerely hope that everyone reading this note will make it a point to come to the Club next weekend for Golf’s Grand Opening party. We promise to not only stir your patriotic emotions, but we’ll have a great time as well. I hope to see you there!

With warmest regards,
Tim Mervosh
General Manager
