The Cat Island Weekly Update: July 19th

Jul 19, 2025 | Weekly Update

Dear Friends of Cat Island Club,

The odds of making a hole in one are approximately 1 in 12,500. When the hole is cut in the back left portion of the green on #16, those odds may even double. However, there is another feat that is even more rare—the Albatross. An Albatross is when a player scores 3 under par on a particular hole, or a two on a par five. The odds of making an Albatross are 1 in 6,000,000.

Well, that’s where the story starts. There are times in our lives when all the stars are in alignment and the golf Gods are smiling. Those times are rare and in the case of this week’s Grass Masters, it was without a doubt a “once in a lifetime” event. Our weekly Grass Masters is a three person team 9-hole event where two teams, six players, play together in a Captain’s Choice format. All three players hit each shot, and the best shot is selected then all play from that spot until the ball is holed. Our weekly Grass Masters is a gross event, so no handicaps are used, and the winning scores are typically in the three to five under range for the nine holes.

But last night was something truly special, unfathomable, would perhaps be a better explanation. First, Matt Trumps made a spectacular hole-in-one on a back left hole location on #16. Congratulations Matt, on an unbelievable shot. However, that was not the story of the night. What happened next wasn’t even the story of the year. It may be a story for the history books; we had two teams (3 players each) playing captain’s choice format that made an Albatross on #18! That’s two twos on a long par five for those of you following at home. Not one but two in the same night on the same hole. The Albatross is the rarest shot in golf at six million to one, but two on the same night, on the same hole, well there are no odds found for such a historic night. I’m betting it would be winning the lottery 10 times in a row or something of that magnitude.

The teams of Sam Keeler, Katz Fujino and Blake Wagner holed their second shot on the magnificent par 5 eighteenth hole.  Then moments later the team of Austin Van Horn, Matt Campell and Drew Boyer covered the same hole in two incredible shots. And history will be rewritten as this record will not be broken in many lifetimes—if ever! And here’s the sharp edge of the sword that cuts deep in the game of golf, the teams compete in a skins game and an Albatross did not win a skin last night! That too is stuff that inspires fairy tales.

And as a footnote to history, we had two other holes in one this past month when Mr. Frank Lesesne made his on the par 3 thirteenth hole then one of our finest junior players, Hogan Wareham made his hole in one on #14. Hogan was so confident in his talent that he had a friend video his shot as he made his ace. Mic drop!

So, the story of the week is this, if you want to be a member where history is made and miraculous feats abound on the golf course, give me a call about membership information. Who knows, you may be next!

Cat Island Club is the coolest place in town. Stay cool friends!
