It was one year ago today that our golf course Superintendent, Ben McNair, started this journey to restore the Cat Island Club golf course. Along with help from our National Agronomist, Steve Cohoon, and golf course architect, John LaFoy, war was declared on the weeds and overgrown brush that was to be Cat Island Club. One year later, Ben celebrated his first Father’s Day last week and we are all celebrating the golf course.
While we commemorate Ben’s one-year anniversary of service, we’re also bidding farewell to one of the brightest lights and smiles in the F&B team. Molli White who has served as our lead Bartender and Laura’s right hand, is moving to Japan thanks to the USMC. Molli and her little nugget, Sawyer, have been fixtures at the Cat Island Club since early last year. She was also a former teammate of both Laura and mine at another club in the area. Please join us in wishing Molli and her family the best in this exciting next chapter.
While the weather has been good for the golf course this week, it did play havoc with our plans for our first Pickleball Social. We had to postpone that event and we’ve rescheduled it for Thursday, July 7th. Our Tennis Professional, Jill Wilson, will be teaching the finer points of pickleball and then hosting some open play from 5:00 PM until 7:00 that evening. Then, we’ll rehash what we’ve learned at the Cabana over some light fare and a few libations. The event is $35 per person for the instruction, food, beverage, and pickleball equipment. We’ll celebrate America’s Independence over the holiday weekend with a pool party on Saturday, July 1st. We’ll have a great patriotic menu for the day and entertainment as we soak up some July rays at the lagoon pool. The party is an all-day affair from noon until 8:00 PM. More details to come on Clubster! Then we’ll also have a special menu for lunch at the pool on the actual 4th from 11:00 until 3:00. Just in time to get in a quick nine holes before going into town for the fireworks show!
One more golf event to put on your calendar—a One Day Member / Guest tournament on July 12th. Members are encouraged to sign up early with their guests, as the field is limited. The cost is $150 per team which includes golf, prizes, food and of course plenty of beverages. We’ll need to stay hydrated on a hot July afternoon. Members, check Clubster for more information and details and again, sign up early to secure your spot in the field.
Next week, be careful on the drive into the club as there will be plenty of delivery trucks on site with the kitchen equipment scheduled for arrival. We’ll have a team of installers present to plug everything in and make sure we’re literally “fired up” for cooking in the clubhouse. Once everything is in place and all the appropriate paperwork is completed, it won’t be long now before the Oak Patio and the view of the 18th green will be yours, as you enjoy dinner at the Cat Island Club clubhouse. I’ll keep you updated on the progress of this final element of our club. Be on the lookout for our next Grand Opening. The golf course one will be hard to beat, but we’ll do our best!
